Cypress, Texas, is located twenty miles northwest of the downtown area of Houston. An unincorporated community, Cypress is a part of Harris county. Prior to 1980, the city was mostly rural, but after several major developments, today the area is a large suburban community.

Cypress's History

The Cypress area was once populated by Atakapan Indian tribes, but they vanished after the appearance of German settlers in the 1840s. General Sam Houston and his Army visited the area in 1836 on the way to Harrisburg just days before the Battle of San Jacinto. The area was mostly rural until the construction of several master-planned communities in 1980. While usually called Cypress, the area is also referred to as Cy-Fair or Cypress-Fairbanks, which comes from the combination of the Cypress and Fairbanks volunteer fire departments.
