Katy's History

Katy is named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad that ran through Katy in the 19th century. Originally, the city was called Cane Island after Cane Island Creek, a branch of Buffalo Bayou. The origins of the name Cane Island are believed to come from the fact that sugar cane and rice were once produced in the area. In fact, Katy holds a festival in October to recoginize the former rice producing town.
