Klein's History

Klein was named after German immigrant Adam Klein, the great-great-grandfather of singer Lyle Lovett. They settled the area in the 1840s. Klein helped establish a post office in 1884, and the members of the community elected to honor Mr. Klein by naming the town after him.

Houston annexed Klein in 1996. During that year, Thomas Phillips, a retired longshoreman and Bordersville resident, joined with representatives of Klein and sued the City of Houston , arguing that the city could not legally annex areas if it did not provide certain services to some of its existing areas, including Bordersville. However, Phillips did not win his case. Even after appealling to the Texas Supreme Court, the ruling held, and today, Klein is considered a part of Houston.
